Faulty Pod Point EV Charger Replaced with a Future-Ready Home Charging Solution

When a Faulty EV Charger Became an Opportunity to Future-Proof the Entire Installation

After years of reliable service, Dave’s Pod Point charger had finally reached the point where it could no longer be relied upon.

Like many homeowners, he’d invested in home charging years earlier when electric vehicles were becoming increasingly popular. Unfortunately, after developing a fault outside of its manufacturer’s warranty, repairing the charger was no longer a realistic option.

The only sensible solution was to replace it.

Rather than simply ordering another charger online, Dave wanted honest advice from experienced EV charger installers who could recommend the best long-term solution for his property. That’s when he decided to contact Electrics and More.

Looking Beyond the Charger:

One thing we always explain to customers is that replacing an EV charger isn’t simply about changing the box on the wall. Every installation starts with assessing the existing electrical installation to make sure everything is still suitable for today’s regulations and the customer’s future needs.

When we inspected Dave’s installation, we found that although he already had a dedicated EV consumer unit, it had been installed several years ago. At the time it was perfectly acceptable. Today, however, standards have evolved. The consumer unit didn’t include surge protection, and the existing protective device wasn’t suitable for the latest installation requirements.

We could have simply replaced the charger and left everything else untouched.

Instead, we explained exactly what had changed, why it mattered and how we could upgrade the existing installation without replacing everything unnecessarily.

Finding the Right Long-Term Solution;

As we talked through the available charger options, one topic kept coming back into the conversation; Warranty.

Having just experienced a charger failure outside of warranty, Dave didn’t want to be back in the same situation again a few years down the line. For him, long-term peace of mind was just as important as charging performance.

That’s why we recommended the Andersen range. The deciding factor wasn’t simply the design or the smart features. It was Andersen’s 7-year manufacturer warranty.

Knowing the charger would continue to be supported by the manufacturer for years to come gave him the confidence he was looking for and made the decision surprisingly straightforward.

A Charger That Better Suited the Property:

He chose the Andersen Quartz Untethered in Midnight Black, creating a much cleaner, more contemporary appearance. Because the charger is untethered, there is no permanently attached cable hanging on the front of the unit, giving it a much neater look while occupying noticeably less wall space than the previous charger.

It instantly modernised the charging area without drawing unnecessary attention to itself.

One feature that stood out was the integrated LED lighting around the charging socket, making it much easier to plug in during darker winter evenings. Sometimes it’s the smallest details that customers appreciate the most.

Upgrading the Parts You Can’t See:

While the new charger certainly transformed the appearance of the installation, one of the most important improvements was hidden inside the consumer unit. We upgraded the internal protective devices by installing a new bidirectional RCBO together with a surge protection device.

The existing CT cable from the original installation was already in place, allowing us to configure dynamic load management without unnecessary rewiring. By making these upgrades, the installation now meets modern requirements while continuing to make good use of the existing infrastructure where appropriate. It’s a great example of how the right advice can often save customers money while still delivering a safer, future-ready installation.

The Finished Result:

What started as a faulty charger replacement became a complete upgrade to the customer’s home charging system. Dave now has a compact, modern smart charger backed by an industry-leading 7-year manufacturer warranty, together with upgraded electrical protection and a professionally tested installation that’s ready to provide many years of reliable service.

Most importantly, he no longer has to worry about the uncertainty that comes with an ageing charger outside of warranty. Instead, he has complete confidence that his home charging system is safe, compliant and built to last.

For us, replacing a faulty charger is about far more than simply swapping one unit for another. It’s about understanding why the customer is replacing it, assessing the existing installation, ensuring it meets current standards, and recommending the most suitable long-term solution for their home.

Whether you’re upgrading an ageing charger or installing your very first EV charger, our goal is always the same: to make the process straightforward, provide honest advice and deliver a professional installation that stands the test of time.

At Electrics and More, we don’t just install EV chargers; we solve problems, provide expert guidance, and deliver installations our customers can rely on for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I replace my old EV charger without rewiring everything?

– In many cases, yes. If the existing wiring is suitable and meets current standards, it can often be reused. We’ll always inspect the installation first and only recommend upgrades where they’re genuinely needed.

Why did you upgrade the existing EV consumer unit?

– As electrical regulations evolve, older EV consumer units may no longer provide the level of protection expected on a new installation. In this case, we upgraded the protective devices and added surge protection, ensuring the installation met current standards.

What happens if my EV charger is outside its warranty?

– If your charger has developed a fault outside of warranty, replacement is often the most cost-effective solution. We’ll assess your existing installation, explain your options and recommend the most suitable replacement for your home and budget.

Why choose an untethered charger?

– Untethered chargers offer a cleaner appearance by using your vehicle’s own charging cable, making them a popular choice for homeowners who prefer a more discreet installation or may change vehicles in the future.

Meet Victor

Hi I’m Victor, the founder of Electrics and More Midlands Ltd. When I started this company in 2019, I wanted to build the kind of electrical business that people genuinely enjoy working with. One that’s reliable, professional and built on trust.

Over the years, I’ve seen how frustrating it can be when tradespeople don’t turn up, communication is poor or customers are left wondering what’s happening next. That’s why we’ve made customer experience just as important as the quality of our workmanship. My passion is helping homeowners and businesses improve their properties safely, whether that’s installing a premium EV charger, carrying out a full rewire or upgrading an aging electrical installation. Every project is approached with the same care, attention to detail and commitment to getting it right.

I believe in giving honest advice, never recommending work that isn’t needed and taking the time to explain your options in plain English. My goal is simple: I want you to feel confident from our very first conversation through to the day the job is complete. The greatest compliment we receive is when customers recommend us to their friends and family. That’s something we never take for granted, and it’s the standard we aim for on every project.

If you’re looking for an electrician who genuinely cares about the quality of the work and the experience you have along the way, I’d love the opportunity to help.
